New Ohio Dairy

Permit applications submitted for new Mercer County dairy

CELINA, Ohio (March 21, 2017) – MVP Dairy LLC, a partnership of VanTilburg Farms and McCarty Dairy, LLC has applied for permits to construct and operate a new dairy farm in northern Mercer County, Ohio, The dairy plans to begin construction in early summer and be operational by spring of 2018. The 4,500-cow dairy is expected to supply milk to Dannon’s Minster, Ohio yogurt plant.

“We’ve farmed in this area for four generations, and our neighbors know how committed we are to sustainability and responsible land stewardship,” said Kyle VanTilburg, co-owner of VanTilburg Farms. “The McCarty family has proven that dairy farms can be even more innovative in the way we improve our practices to protect the environment.”

The dairy is designed with the care of the cows, the environment and community in mind, and features an innovative and patented anaerobic treatment cell system that significantly reduces waste, odor and fly populations while implementing a recycling system that maximizes benefits for animal care, crop care and the environment. The proven technology of this system is used by many municipalities throughout the United States, including eight municipalities in Mercer County.

The 82-acre farm, sited adjacent to Hasis Road and the south side of U.S. Route 33, will source corn and silage to feed its cows from local farmers and will use a variety of conservation and precision agriculture techniques approved by certified advisers to protect the environment and maintain water quality. MVP Dairy, LLC is expected to hire approximately 35 employees to operate the farm. A visitors center is also planned for the dairy, adding an agritourism component to the farm, where groups can be hosted while serving as an educational resource for the community.

“We believe our success is dependent upon the communities where we live and operate our farms, and when the community grows and prospers, so do we,” said Clay McCarty, co-owner of McCarty Family Farms.

The McCartys and VanTilburgs are planning a voluntary community meeting for late April to welcome questions and comments and to share information about the new proposed facility.
